Thom Becraft, the companies founder, started in the lumber industry in 1974. He is a certified softwood and hardwood lumber inspector, and worked as a sawmill and dry kiln manager for a major New England company. He also served as domestic and international sales manager for 10 years.
In 1991, Thom and his wife Mary decided to venture out on their own, and Lake George Forest Products LLC was formed. The first few years, Thom wholesaled lumber from many New England mills. Mary handled everything in the office.
A strong and loyal supply base led to the leasing of dry kilns and a warehouse in 1994. Due to continued growth, in 2001, the company purchased property, built additional warehouses, and leased additional kiln space in Warrensburg, NY.
In 2004, after graduating from college, Thom and Mary's son Dave joined the firm. Having spent every summer since the age of 12 piling and grading lumber, Dave entered with a full knowledge of the manufacturing and grading process. Dave now heads the purchasing department, oversees all grading, and assists with sales.
In 2005, the sawmill adjacent to the Warrensburg warehouse was purchased. This brought Thom full circle back to the manufacturing end.
In 2006, Thom and Mary's daughter, Katie, left her school teaching job and joined the firm. Katie assists with the accounting and handles shipping and receiving.
With the whole family involved, Lake George Forest Products LLC is truly a family owned business.
